Mason Browne
Mason (they/them) is a descendant of the Darug people, now living and working on Gadigal country. A consummate and interdisciplinary creative director, production designer and producer, they work across live performance, television, film and experiential mediums. Their practise is values-based and artist-led; firmly rooted in affirmative action, strategic thinking, collaboration and notions of radical welcome; drawn to powerful ideas where audience, artist and place are one in experience, a playful and mind-blowing interplay.
Their recent theatre credits include Sex Magick & Whitefella Yella Tree (Griffin Theatre Co), the immersive theatre work Eternityland (Dancing Giant Productions), Jekyl & Hyde (Hayes Theatre Co), Leap (Neil Gooding Productions) The Deb (Australian Theatre for Young People), Young Frankenstein (Hayes Theatre Co), American Psycho The Musical (BB Arts / Two Doors), Cry-Baby (LPD / Hayes Theatre Co and Darlinghurst Nights (Hayes Theatre Co), Nosferatutu or Bleeding at the Ballet (Critical Stages), Summer Rain (New Theatre), Ruthless! (The Theatre Division) and The Importance of Being Earnest (Reginald Theatre). Their work with youth theatre company Tantrum Theatre brought to life devised pieces Riot!, Powerforce Live and Savage Naked Love directed by Leticia Caceres.
Mason has produced, designed and directed experiential events across Australia and the USA with clients including Netflix, AppleTV, Audi, Vodka O, Mercedes-Benz, Australian Fashion Week, Stereosonic, Beyond The Valley & Lost Paradise Music Festivals, Darlinghurst Theatre Company, Sydney Dance Company, Opera Australia and Woodford Folk Festival. They are the Co-Founder of Gaytimes, Australia’s premier LGBTIQ Music Festival and event series Closet Party, in Narrm / Melbourne.
Most recently, their work in Nipaluna / Hobart at DarkLab saw them curating the Night Mass experience for over 13,000 people at Dark Mofo in 2023 as a resident Creative Producer. Mason currently works at Alfred, an experiential design practice as Senior Creative Producer.
They have received 4 nominations for Best Costume Design at the Sydney Theatre Awards-- in 2008 for Sunday in the Park with George, in 2015 for Ruthless!, and in 2018 for Cry-Baby. In 2019, Mason was awarded Best Costume Design of an Independent Production for American Psycho.
With an eye for style details Mason has honed their skill as a creative director and stylist on music videos and fashion editorial for Red Riders, Dappled Cities Fly, Lisa Mitchell, Abby Dobson, Marcia Hines and publications Yen, Instyle, Culture, Oyster, The Vine and Vogue Brides Australia.
